Career Fair Week - Day 1

Preparing for Career Fairs

Review the list of companies

Select the top five employers you are interested in and visit them last

Know a bit about the company before visiting their table
What service or product do they provide?
          How large is the company?
          Where is the company located?
What positions are they looking to fill?

Prepare a “personal commercial” to introduce yourself

Prepare/update materials to bring to the career fair. These may include the following:

*   Resumes
*   Portfolio (professional folder/file to hold your materials).
*   Note-pad and pen
*   Examples of your work (displayed in a Career Portfolio-if applicable).

Review possible interview questions. (Note: Some employers conduct on-the spot interviews)

    Develop questions to ask employers

Plan your wardrobe: professional interview attire is always recommended.

Professional/Business Interview Attire Information

The first impression you make on a potential employer is the MOST IMPORTANT one. The first judgement an employer will make will be based on how you look. This is exactly why it is important to dress appropriately for a job interview.

Men's Interview Attire:
  • Suit  - solid colors such as navy, black or dark gray
  • Long sleeved shirt
  • Belt
  • Tie
  • Dark socks, conservative leather shoes
  • No jewelry
  • Neat, professional hairstyle
  • Neatly trimmed nails
Women's Interview Attire:
  • Suit - if wearing a skirt, it should be long so you can sit down comfortably
  • Coordinated blouse
  • conservative shoes - no open toed shoes
  • Limited jewelry - no dangling earrings
  • Professional hairstyle - away from your face
  • Light make-up and perfume
  • Neatly manicured clean nails
Tips for both:
  • Make sure your attire fits you
  • Get your outfit ready before you start interviewing
  • Polish your shoes
  • Cover tattoos, if possible
  • Do not bring gum or soda to the interview

Choosing The Right Color

Here a list of different colors and what they convey:

Blue - conveys feelings of calm, trust, and confidence. Darker blues convey authority and confidence. It seems to be the favorite color among men.

Brown - a neutral color that evokes feeling of calm. It is a great solid, neutral color for any interview.

Gray - It evokes sophistication and neutrality. Gray can make you look powerful, but is not a domineering as black.

Black - the most popular color for suits and dresses in interviews. Black is a very commanding color that conveys power, authority, and even drama. This is your best option for a job in a conservative environment or when you are applying for a high-level executive position.

Red- a powerful color, but you want to be careful. A pop of red can convey just the right amount of passion.

White - white is a great color for shirts and blouses. It conveys truth and simplicity.
